With our new Lifesaver Lush, the printed side is the one you lay on—printed side up! When you hold the mat, it's easy to tell: the printed side is a beautiful, soft, stay-dry minky material, while the solid side is the PUL waterproof fabric we use in many of our products.

The type of mess determines how to wash it. Here is a simple breakdown:

For lightly soiled mats (new items, drool, food spills, grass, dirt, and similar everyday messes), no pre-rinse is needed. Just wipe away any solid matter and toss it in the wash.

1. Select a heavy-duty cycle (longest cycle) in warm water (max. 140F / 60C)
2. Use a full amount of a good detergent (we recommend Tide Original)
3. See drying tips below before storing

For heavily soiled mats (urine, feces, blood, vomit), a pre-rinse before the main wash is important to prevent odor and staining. Do not let the mat sit soiled for more than 3 days.

1. Wipe away any solid matter and rinse promptly after use
2. Run a pre-rinse or quick/speed wash cycle in warm water with a small amount of detergent (use cold water for blood)
3. Follow with a heavy-duty wash (longest cycle) in warm water with a full amount of detergent
4. See drying tips below before storing

For all washes: Avoid bleach, fabric softeners, and castile or coconut-based soaps, as these reduce absorbency over time.

For oil or cream-based stains: Pretreat with a small drop of blue Dawn dish soap, hand wash, and rinse thoroughly before putting it in the machine.

Drying the Lush (important):

The Lush is large and waterproof, which means it needs extra attention to dry fully before storing to avoid mold and mildew.

• After the wash cycle finishes, run a second spin cycle with the absorbent side (the solid PUL back) facing outward toward the drum. This removes as much water as possible before drying.
• Hang to dry whenever you can, in a spot with good airflow and with the absorbent side facing up. If drying indoors, a fan helps speed things up significantly.
• If using the dryer, tumble dry on low-medium and remove immediately when the cycle ends.
• Always make sure the mat is completely dry before folding or storing.

That's a great question! Unfortunately it is a little tricky to answer. If you evenly and steadily distributed water across the entire mat, we could probably give you an amount, but that's not really how most humans leak and therefore not how the mats get used. We do have this handy video to show you how our Lifesaver Mats absorb. This should give you an idea of how it works and if it will be a good fit for the mess you have in mind!
